Course Description:

This course is designed to guide you on a path to find inspiration, new techniques and concepts and use the camera as a tool for capturing the extraordinary.  The art of classic, contemporary and figurative portraiture…sceanics, pictorials and everything in between will be covered with lectures, demonstrations and photographic assignments.

You will be guided through a full cycle of styles and trends of portraiture from paintings by the “Old Masters” to the contemporary magazine illustrations of today, and learn to appreciate the influence and inspiration of our heritage.  You will learn to see and use light (regardless of the source) to create a diversity of portrait styles from traditional to fine art.  Learn to let your intuition guide you, and to live life fully, deeply, and joyfully…this opens the door to being an artist with the camera.

Subjects to be Covered:

  • Critique of student work
  • The elegance of window light – Demonstration with Mother/child and figure study

      •     Environmental light – Demonstration with individuals, couples and figure study

      •     Lectures will cover the art of portraiture with a potpourri of ideas to help interpret and control sessions from start to finish…composition and design, the philosophy of one for thee and one for me…and digital art.

      •     Demonstrations – pastel fusion and oil painting on digital fine art papers

      •     Creating art pieces with solvent transfers

      •     Printing with fine art papers…final presentations…matting & framing

      •     Demonstration – Creating digital art

      •     Finding a unique vision – Goals & Dreams

      •     Student assignments – Conceptual photo session,  photographing with models, self-portraits,  photographing texture for digital art,  creating digital art

 

How the Course will Work:

Joyce has been actively involved in photography for 50 years, and through lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on sessions she will share her years of experience as a gifted artist and entrepreneur.  This will be a week of intensity, fun, soul searching and growth. Shooting assignments are designed to stretch your imagination in creativity and concept.  You will experience being the photographer as well as the subject, and have the opportunity to put your new enthusiasm to the test.  During the digital art day, you will use images and textures from assignments to collage or experiment with Photoshop techniques to create a fine art piece.  Participants will receive notes with lecture outlines, sections on inspiration, technical data sheets, Photoshop tutorials, and source information

Who should attend:   This is a workshop for all level of photographers.  Beginners will be given a wealth of information and guide lines to develop confidence and originality as a portrait photographer, and the more advanced photographer will discover a unique way of

approaching portraiture.  Exploring portraiture as fine art will be beneficial to any photographer interested in this elusive subject. 

About The Instructor:

Joyce Wilson has been a photographer for over 50 years, and has been teaching workshops throughout the world since l970.  A studio in Indianapolis, IN served as base until l996 when she moved to Santa Barbara, CA, and accepted a faculty position at Brooks Institute.  She left this position in 2010 to concentrate on her personal work, and a few select clients.  Her work is represented through art galleries, featured in solo and group exhibitions, and is part of the permanent collection at the International Photography Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

After a long and successful career in Indianapolis, Joyce moved to Santa Barbara in l996 and was appointed to the faculty of Brooks Institute.  She left this position in 2010 to concentrate on her personal work.  Joyce continues to guest lecture and teach workshops at Brooks, and lectures and teaches creative workshops throughout the United States and abroad in addition to assignment work for select clientele.

Her images have appeared in advertising usage by Fuji Film, Prudential Insurance, Mamiya America, Kodak, and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.  She holds the Master/Craftsman degrees from PPA, is a Fellow of the American Society of Photographers, and was awarded an Honorary Master of Science from Brooks Institute.  In 2003, the International Photographic Council honored her at the United Nations with the distinguished Leadership Award, and she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Professional Photographers of America in 2006.

Her fine art images are featured in solo and group exhibitions, and are in the permanent collection of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the International Photography Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, and the Sherman Hines Museum in Nova Scotia, Canada.  An inspirational book of Joyce’s images entitled “Imagine” was published in 2005.
